Meghan Markle left a significant impression on King Charles from the beginning, leading him to give her a distinctive nickname that hints at his genuine feelings toward her.
Charles, while Meghan was still part of the Royal Family, created a unique moniker for her. Meghan and Harry married in May 2018 but announced their departure from the royal duties less than two years later, leading to strained relationships within the family. However, before their wedding, Charles had already given Meghan a notable nickname.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl, in her book *The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown*, reveals that “Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience.” Tungsten, a metal renowned for its strength and durability, mirrors the qualities Charles admired in Meghan.
The current use of this nickname by Charles remains uncertain, especially given the couple’s estrangement from the royal family. The rift has deepened over the years, fueled by their critical remarks about the monarchy in various platforms such as their interview with Oprah, their Netflix series, multiple interviews, and Harry’s memoir *Spare*.
This tension has notably affected the relationship between Harry and his older brother, Prince William. Royal expert Ingrid Seward told *The Mirror*: “William is sensitive, he likes structure and has perseverance. He does not give up easily. His relationship with brother Harry upset him more than he would care to admit. But he found it easier to cut ties rather than allow himself to be continually annoyed.”
The extent of this estrangement is evident as it remains unclear when the brothers last interacted. During a *60 Minutes* interview in January 2023, Harry confirmed he had no current communication with William but expressed a desire for future reconciliation, stating, “I look forward to us being able to find peace.” When pressed on the duration of their silence, Harry admitted it had been “a while.”
Despite the bleak outlook for a reconciliation, some believe there was one person capable of mending their relationship: their late mother, Princess Diana. Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond opines that Diana would have been devastated by their ongoing feud but would have found a way to reconcile them. “I think she’d be distraught that the boys are still feuding,” she told GB News. “But I think somehow she’d have got them together and just sorted it all out.”

Bond further described Harry as “the Spencer” of the two brothers, noting his fiery, vulnerable, and complex nature, akin to Diana. She added, “He is forging his own way much like his mother did. He is the troubled one of the two.”
Harry’s recent visits to the UK have underscored the strained family ties. He was in the UK for the Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary in May but did not meet with any royal family members, including his father, King Charles. The last encounter between Harry and Charles was in February when Harry visited following Charles’s cancer announcement. However, their meeting at Clarence House was brief, lasting only 45 minutes.
The current state of the royal family reflects deep divisions, with little indication of imminent reconciliation. Charles’s affectionate yet strong nickname for Meghan, “Tungsten,” suggests he once saw her as a resilient and robust addition to the family. However, the ongoing discord underscores the complex and often strained relationships within the royal family, particularly following Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties and their subsequent public criticisms.
