The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, has revealed an unusual hobby that she enjoys, despite her husband Prince William finding it peculiar. While Kate is known for her active lifestyle and love for sports, there is one particular physical pursuit that she is passionate about, but William considers it “crazy.”
During an appearance on Mike Tindall’s podcast, “The Good, The Bad and The Rugby,” Kate opened up about this unconventional hobby, which she even practices in the dark. She shared her lifelong fondness for physical activities, recalling how her parents encouraged her and her siblings to be active and participate in team sports from a young age.
Kate reminisced, “I can always remember being physical, using our bodies, whether it’s walking, climbing the lake district, in Scotland [or] swimming from a young age. [My parents] always encouraged us to be physically active and sporty and they always encouraged us into doing team sports and trying things.”
While the specific hobby was not disclosed, Kate’s revelation highlights her adventurous spirit and willingness to explore unique physical challenges, even if they seem unconventional to others, like her husband Prince William.
Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales, has expressed her profound appreciation for the invigorating practice of cold water swimming, which offers numerous health benefits and involves immersing oneself in outdoor locations or unheated pools during the winter season, even in the absence of daylight. The Princess enthusiastically remarked, “Cold swimming – the colder, the better. I absolutely love it. To the extent that William is exclaiming, ‘You’re crazy,’ and it’s dark and raining. I will actively seek out cold water. I love it.”
The Princess’s affinity for aquatic pursuits is evident. In 2015, it was revealed that she had obtained a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Advanced Open Water Diver qualification, enabling her to dive to depths of up to 98 feet (30 metres).
This certification also allows her to engage in diving activities alongside her husband, Prince William, who has held scuba diving qualifications for an extended period and serves as the president of the British Sub-Aqua Club. A spokesperson for the Princess informed the Telegraph at the time, “Diving is an activity the Duchess greatly enjoys, and the Duke of Cambridge, who is, of course, the president of the BSAC, has previously expressed his hope that his children will develop an interest in the sport.”
The royal personage was required to successfully complete a comprehensive scuba diving course, encompassing five distinct dives, including a deep dive and an underwater navigation exercise. This rigorous training imparted the necessary skills to effectively manage the physiological effects associated with deeper scuba diving, as well as the proficient handling of essential equipment such as a compass and a dive knife, crucial tools for addressing emergencies like entanglement in fishing nets.
In the same year, William candidly expressed his fervent passion for the sport, revealing his aspiration for Prince George, then aged two, to follow in his footsteps. “Scuba diving has truly opened my eyes not only to extraordinary sights but also to the profound responsibilities we bear as guardians of the underwater world,” William remarked. “I harbor the hope that one day my son, George, will also experience the wonders that snorkeling and scuba diving have to offer. At present, bath time is quite a challenge,” he added with a touch of humor, “but perhaps donning a snorkel and mask might serve to calm him.”
