Prince George’s surprising school nickname sounds anything but royal

Prince George, the eldest child of Prince William and Princess Kate, reportedly cherishes his unusual yet endearing playground nickname, which even his parents use in their everyday interactions with their young brood.

Since their relocation to Windsor in September 2022, Prince George, now 10 years old, has been attending Lambrook, an independent preparatory school in Berkshire, conveniently close to Adelaide Cottage. Alongside his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte, aged nine, and Louis, six, the trio has seamlessly integrated into their new environment. However, memories of George’s earlier school days at Thomas’s Battersea in London are still fondly remembered, especially his cherished nickname bestowed upon him by classmates.

Prior to his school transfer, George was affectionately known as ‘P.G’ by his peers, a playful nod to his title of Prince George. Reports indicate that this nickname has evolved since his move to Windsor, morphing into ‘P.G Tips’—a delightful detail that tea enthusiasts are sure to appreciate.

Despite some children shunning nicknames, George reportedly adores his and is often referred to simply as ‘Tips’ by classmates and family alike. Fortunately, his royal status doesn’t set him apart; rather, his beloved nickname signifies his acceptance and integration within his peer group. According to a source quoted in Vanity Fair, “He’s very popular and has a lot of friends, and there’s very little fuss made about who he is.”

Prince George isn’t the only young royal to have a nickname within the family. Princess Kate has affectionately called their youngest son, Prince Louis, ‘Lou Bugs’, while Princess Charlotte is known as ‘Lottie’ or ‘Poppet’. Royal enthusiasts were delighted to learn from the 2023 documentary Charles III: The Coronation Year that Princess Anne affectionately greets her newly crowned older brother, Charles, as ‘Hello, Old Bean’, prompting a jovial response from him as he kissed her hand.
