Prince William has appointed José Andrés, a close friend of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, to the Earthshot Prize Council, a significant project focused on climate change with a budget of £50 million. José Andrés, 55, is a renowned chef and founder of World Central Kitchen, an organization providing food relief during humanitarian crises.
He is also a charity partner of Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation. The Sussexes describe him as a “longtime friend” on their website, and he has publicly praised them, saying they “bring hope to each and every community” they engage with.
The Earthshot Prize, launched earlier this year, has been called “the most prestigious environment prize in history.” It recognizes individuals and organizations for their efforts in combating climate change. The Prize Council, which includes high-profile members like Sir David Attenborough, will choose projects deserving of £5 million in funding. Prince William, 41, is set to host the next Earthshot ceremony in Cape Town in November.
José Andrés has extensive experience in humanitarian efforts through his nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, which provides meals to people affected by natural disasters, climate change, and other crises. His work has earned him a Nobel Peace Prize nomination and recognition as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People on two occasions.
On joining the Earthshot Prize Council, he expressed his excitement, stating there is “so much we can do to inspire the world to see food as a powerful tool for creativity and change.” Other new members of the council include author Nemonte Nenquimo and environmental activist Wanjira Mathai.
This news comes shortly after Prince Harry’s recent visit to the UK for a memorial service for his and William’s uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes. The estranged brothers reportedly sat apart and did not interact during the service in Norfolk. It was the first time both had attended an event together since King Charles III’s Coronation last year. However, it is believed they have not spoken since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.
