Prince William is said to harbor a longstanding grudge against his uncle, Prince Andrew, primarily due to Andrew’s perceived unkindness toward Kate Middleton. This tension is now reportedly influencing discussions about Andrew’s future residence at the Royal Lodge.
According to royal expert Richard Kay, Prince William’s animosity towards Prince Andrew stems from the way Andrew treated Kate when she was first introduced to the Royal Family. This alleged hostility is believed to be a significant factor in William’s ongoing efforts to push for Andrew’s removal from his current residence.
Prince Andrew’s public life took a severe downturn following his 2020 BBC Newsnight interview, which led to his retreat from the public eye. Despite this, tensions between Andrew and William have persisted. In early 2022, Buckingham Palace announced that Andrew had relinquished his military roles and royal patronages, a move that some speculate William influenced significantly. Reports suggest that William has been eager to prevent Andrew from participating in royal events and may even be pushing for his complete eviction from the Royal Lodge.
Richard Kay, speaking to Mail Online, has suggested that William’s grudge is fueled by his belief that King Charles has been too lenient with Andrew. Kay claims that William feels his father should be more decisive in dealing with Andrew and that this sentiment might be driving William’s insistence on Andrew’s removal from the Royal Lodge, potentially to make way for William and Kate.
Royal commentator Tom Quinn supports this view, noting that King Charles might see relocating Andrew to Frogmore Cottage as a solution to multiple issues. This move would, according to Quinn, serve several purposes: it would signal to Prince Harry that his return to Frogmore is not an option, reinforce that Andrew’s disgrace has consequences, and free up a grand residence for William and Kate. Quinn emphasizes that Charles views Royal Lodge as the only royal residence in Windsor suitable for his heir.
The potential relocation of William and Kate to Royal Lodge remains uncertain. A source close to the couple has indicated that moving to such a large residence would significantly alter their lifestyle. Currently, William and Kate reside at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Great Park, a home valued for its family-friendly atmosphere and lack of live-in staff. Transitioning to the Royal Lodge would necessitate accommodating a larger domestic staff, a change the couple has reportedly been reluctant to embrace.
