The public feud between Prince Harry and Prince William is now widely recognized, but it was an earlier comment by Harry that first shed light on the depth of their estrangement.
For a long time, the two brothers appeared inseparable, especially as they supported each other after the tragic death of their mother, Princess Diana. However, tensions began to surface with the onset of Harry’s relationship with Meghan Markle. William, among others, expressed concerns that Harry’s romance was progressing too quickly. Despite these concerns, Harry and Meghan married in May 2018 and welcomed their son Archie the following year. By mid-2019, the couple’s decision to leave their joint charity with William and Kate sparked widespread speculation.
In October 2019, the situation came to a head. During an interview for ITV’s *Harry & Meghan: An African Journey*, Harry’s comments provided a revealing glimpse into their strained relationship. “Part of this role and part of this job, and this family, being under the pressure that it’s under, inevitably, you know, stuff happens,” Harry remarked. “But look, we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers. And we’re certainly on different paths at the moment, but I’ll always be there for him, as I know he’ll always be there for me.”
He added, “We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but you know, I love him dearly. The majority of this stuff [in the press] is created out of nothing, but you know, as brothers, you have good days and bad days.” Just a few months later, Harry and Meghan announced their departure from the royal family and gave a bombshell interview to Oprah Winfrey, alleging racism within the royal household. Their subsequent Netflix series and Harry’s memoir „Spare” continued to criticize the monarchy, further straining his relationship with William.
The fallout has been significant. Sources suggest that William has now chosen to sever ties with his younger brother entirely. Jennie Bond, a former royal correspondent for the BBC, told Times Radio: “William seems to have completely dismissed Harry from his life. With the pressures of his own family, including his wife’s ongoing cancer treatment, and his responsibilities as a future king, William appears to have no emotional bandwidth left to address the rift with Harry. It seems he has effectively disowned him.”
Royal author Tom Quinn echoed similar sentiments, indicating that the relationship might be irreparably damaged. In an exclusive interview with The Mirror US, Quinn explained: “With their own families now in place, the brothers no longer rely on each other for emotional support as they did after their mother’s death. Their partners now fulfill those roles, and these partners are not affected by the dysfunctional aspects of their royal upbringing.”
Quinn also noted that despite his grievances about his role as the ‘spare,’ Harry has not actively sought to mend fences with William. “Harry seems to expect William to make the first move towards reconciliation. William, however, is so frustrated by Harry’s criticisms and attacks on the royal family that he has closed himself off from any attempt at repair, fearing that any outreach might be rejected.”
As the feud between the brothers continues to evolve, it remains unclear whether their relationship can be salvaged or if it will remain fractured.
